Crime - Keyless Car Theft
18th of September, 2024
There has been a significant increase in the theft of keyless entry vehicles across Preston.
Many of these thefts involve a technique known as a ‘relay attack.’ Thieves use radio interference technology to capture the signal from a key inside the house and transfer it to a portable device, allowing them to quickly and easily unlock and drive the car away.
To help protect your vehicle, consider the following tips:
- Disable keyless entry: Refer to your car’s handbook for instructions on how to do this. It’s a simple and free step.
- Use a Faraday bag or box: These items block the signals needed to copy keyless entry systems, providing an extra layer of security.
- Employ additional security measures: Use steering locks, alarms, tracking devices, and immobilisers if you have them.
- Avoid leaving spare keys or valuables in your vehicle, even in the glove box.
- At home, keep car keys out of sight: Don’t leave them in clear view of windows or within reach of the letterbox, as thieves can use hooks and canes to steal them.
- Be cautious with high-value and performance cars: These are often targeted for this type of crime.
- Never leave the engine running, especially in frosty weather.
- Use anti-tamper or security screws on your registration plate: These can be easily fitted but cannot be removed with standard tools. They are available from various online retailers, DIY stores, and vehicle maintenance shops.
